What Does Shonen Mean?

"Shonen" (Shōnen) literally translates to "few years." The term typically refers to Japanese males between the ages of twelve and eighteen. More commonly, the term Shonen is used in parallel with manga and anime in Japan that target this younger teen demographic. Shonen anime and manga are marketed towards "young teen males" (boys). There are various subgenres in shonen manga, such as action, martial arts, robots, science fiction, fantasy, sports, horror, or mythological creatures. Some of my all-time favorite Shonen anime are Naruto, One Piece, and Doraemon!

The main reason I chose Shonen as the name of my soda brand is that I genuinely love Shonen anime and manga! I grew up watching anime every day, and Japan's anime culture is insane. The anime characters are visible anywhere in Japan. In terms of advertising, it's on water and snacks, buses, trains, and even a city filled with anime goods! It has now become a cultural force defining the country itself. It's a massive part of Japan's cultural industry but also of myself.

Another reason I named my brand "Shonen" is because I dreamed of creating a soda company when I was around seven years old. As a shonen, all I literally did was watch anime and eat Japanese snacks. I thought it was a perfect word for my company because that time was my life's favorite time.
